Hunting Season Information and Riding Tips

Updated: Oct 7

Always wear blaze orange when riding during hunting season!

Tewksbury operates a deer management program that occurs on township owned land that allows hunting Monday through Saturdays by paid permit with permission of the Tewksbury Police Department. There are 12 properties hunted, however, the properties that are most likely overlap with hunting and horses are:

  • Christie Hoffman (least hunted of all parks)

  • Pascale Farm Park

  • Fairmount North

  • Pottersville Reservoir

  • Hell Mountain Preserve

See below for the schedule for hunting permitted on Tewksbury land.

Hunting on private land

Please remember many of our generous landowners allow hunting on their property - including Sundays.  As always, please be courteous to any landowners and/or hunters you might encounter.

The state regulations permit much larger and longer seasons on private land that riders should be aware of when using trails that traverse private property, see the chart below:

Gun hunting season

During the gun hunting seasons, especially during ”6 day” season (12/9-12/14)  and on Saturdays, riders may encounter hunters and groups of hunters with firearms on the township properties assisting the township with deer management.

Very few hunters are active on Christie Hoffman Park, so if you are looking for a Saturday ride spot during season, it will almost always be the best option.

Best times to ride - always wear blaze orange during hunting season

Riding in the middle of the day is a wise idea, avoiding the morning and dusk hours. Riders should wear blaze orange during any active hunting season.

Hunting is also permitted in Hunterdon County's Cold Brook Preserve, as well as on Tewksbury Land Trust properties.  Hunting is not permitted on Sundays on these properties.

Again - please wear hunter orange when trail riding during hunting season. For your safety, please assume hunting is allowed on all properties, seven days a week.

Many of the Hunterdon County Parks are open during hunting season for riding; and CLOSED TO HUNTING on SUNDAYS:
